I earn money as a professional advertising photographer, but I also shoot tons of photos just for fun. When it comes to these other photos, so far they have been only generating costs (I recently had to purchase a second 750GB hard drive to support my ‘habit’, not to mention the numerous printouts).

About a year ago, one of my friends recommended to try selling these photos through the numerous online stock agencies.

The way this works is that you get a certain percentage (usually 50% if decide to give the given agency exclusivity) of the sales price (which usually ranges from $1-$3 for low resolution pictures for use on the web – to even several hundred dollars for large resolution images with extended buyout license for billboards etc.).

This was an excellent idea, with these sales alone in the past year I was able to upgrade my camera to a modern 10MP model, buy an excellent 85mm/f=1.4 lens and two professional studio flash lamps with softboxes. (not to mention the numerous photos I also purchased myself from these sites for use in my graphics design business)

So how do you get started?
